Model Train Sizes

There is some confusion for those new to model railroading and model trains, regarding “Scale” and “Guage.” These terms are used in the same context by many new model train enthusiasts, in reference to model railroading, gauge refers to the distance between the tracks running rails. In an example of O gauge, the train track has a distance of 1.25 inches (31.8mm) between running rails. This is a fairly universal standard.

Scale is a size, a proportionate ratio of a model train’s measurements to the dimensions of the full-size train. Also, referring to O scale, the proprtional measurement would be 1:48 scale.
